I've recently noticed a few comments springing up about language, and the proper use there of. John had issues with Joe's punctuation, I had something to say about Mum's luv ov txt spk, and Garry had some observations on the NZ dialect - most of it pretty well founded (which is a bit rich coming from an Aussie mate, mate).
Anyway - it got me thinking about the differences between NZ English and our own Queens English. Here are a few of the main ones:

Eh! after a statement of the obvious (thus answering your own question). E.g. - nice weather today eh!?, thats a fancy looking sheep eh!?

Chaps (or chappies) - for crisps or chips

Brew - used when addressing a friend (as in brother). e.g. nice bike brew, eh!?

As - e.g. hot as eh brew. 'As' can be added to anything (much like 'innit') to show an extreme of. Cold as, hot as, wet as, bold as.

Kia Ora - NZ is officially has two languages, Maori and English. English is obviously predominant but Maori is definitely a big thing amongst, erm, Maoris obviously, but also in play groups (Buster already knows a couple of Maori songs and words as well a pretty fierce Hakka). News presenters wish you good morning and good night in Maori and there are two or three Maori only TV stations. Its pretty cool actually but the way they pronounce their vowels is completely different, which I think has helped make the NZ accent so distinctive. Oh yeah, and a Wh makes F so Whakatane would be Fakatane.

Thats it for now - but if you want to see a Aussie mickey take on the NZ accent check out this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdVHZwI8pcA&feature=related

Kia Ora!
Thanks for the lingo tips. If you think bagging your funny accent is a bit rich, wait until we beat you (insert nationality of your choice) at the creckut, eh?

Oh no Garry - you have raised your head above the sporting parapet have you - Kay will be sending you horses heads in the post if you don't watch it.

Also, remind me how proud you lot used to be of your cycling team - who now languish with the likes of the Isle of Man whilst the mighty GB score 9 golds at the recent Worlds! Roll on Beijing.

Cricket - I'll give you that one, but like Sis mentioned, when it matters in rugby you really can't knock England (though now you have NZ's second choice coach you might have some luck, maybe even the Semis at the next WC if the gods are with you and you don't play Italy too early on).

I'll do some reading up about Aussie rules so I can comment on Simon's adopted team - are they on par with the Rabbitos?

And Steve - you dare comment on my grammar when you insist on still using smilies. Controversial as, eh?

Exints: I could hear Granddad in your comments CJ - well done! I wonder what he would have made of Weebly? "By the centre! On'tinternet eh? Getaway! That's grand. Aye, it is."

Sports: Dunno about parapets. More like standing on the ramparts waving the battle flag.

I don't follow the rugger that much. Lose, did we? Never been much chop since Campo quit, although I notice we always give the try-hards a scare. Anyway, rugger is a bit like womens tennis - it's not who wins, it's who loses first. No wonder we Aussies can't get the hang of it.

Just on rugby though, I was at a function recently when John Eales, the legendary ex-captain of the awesome Wallabies, was asked by some mischief-maker what he thought of a Kiwi taking charge of the team. His thoughtful reply went a little like this:
- Kiwis and Aussies both share sporting pride;
- We both share similar cultures;
- We both share a love of rugby;
- We both love living in Australia.
Nyuk nyuk!

I didn't know we had a cycling team, though I'm not surprised they haven't done too good - we Aussies don't do the D-word.

For Aussie Rules here's the good oil:

Sorry, I seem to have written a small book. Got any plinkton? Classic.

1000 sorries! I picked up a typo in my earlier post: D-word should be P-word.

Mtm, I found this snippet in today's SMH which may be of interest:
CADEL EVANS has placed himself in the best possible position to win the Tour de France by placing third in a sensational day of racing in the Massif Central on stage six.

Well, he's GOT to be Welsh! Cadel! Evans!?
Anyway, never mind him, what about OUR lad from the Isle of Man , Mark Cavendish....two Stage Wins on his first Tour!! Three Cheers for him, even though he appears to be a rather arrogant litte s..d!
We are having a Feast here.....Test Cricket, the Tour, and today Dad'll be watching the Motorcycling GP............what happened to the Aussie's at Wimbledon? There was a time when they dominated the Sport.....
Cheers Garry, and Welcome to Paul's diary.

Getting a bit chilly (range 5-19C) in the mornings now when I'm on my walk, although the skies still the deepest azure. No frost on the pumpkin yet, but not far off. How is it over there Paul? Is there any surf near your place?

Referring to your wild boar hunting, have you seen the 1999 Kiwi film "What becomes of the broken hearted?" There's a wild boar hunt in the film that stuck in my mind, and is how I picture your adventure. Then there's the 1984 Aussie film "Razorback", which is pretty good.

Wallabies whip the 'Boks. Tall Blacks looking to 2012. The Mighty Bombers pipped by the Tigers. Poms in trouble in the cricket(!).

Hey Garry - I spoke too soon, winter has landed here good and proper! Its still pretty mild but we have had 3 days of rain now. I hear that the lakes needed it (NZ is pretty reliant on hydro power), and its falling as snow at the local ski station, but thats only slight consolation. When th esun does pop out it gets up to 15ish, which is just nice for winter, but my wood pile is getting damp so I am hoping that it breaks soon.

Surf wise - depends on what level your at. There is apparently a nice left and right hand break just down the road (maybe 10mins) that is a fav amongst locals - but if you have much experience I think that it would be a bit tame. Are you a surfer - I have never been but am quietly lining myself up with some of the locals for a go this summer. As long as I dont look down and see 2" of water covering razor sharp coral (or sharks) then I am in.

I haven't seen the films - and haven't been back hunting since. However myself and a Yank that has befriended me are off over to 'the twins' house next weekend for some pig action (I hope they meant hunting!). I have learned my lesson and will stay well back come slaughter time but other than that its a good mornings fun - gets you out and about in the woods if nothing else.

I'm leaving off sport - cant believe SA beat us by 10 (!) wickets in the first test - disgusting. The Tri nations is a pretty good tournament though - NZ V Aus this weekend will be pretty heavy going I'm sure. I'll be heading down the pub to cheer on my adopted AB's (if you cant beat em and all that).

Have you had Simon out to any Aus rules games yet? Hopefully I can time it right when we come over for a visit to take in a game.

Goes without saying if you ever fancy a trip down here just let us know, your more than welcome - a cosy spare room and lots of pig meat, what more could you ask for?

Ciao for now

Can Gary Surf??....He rides those waves like a Pro - trust me I've seen him in action!

When you mention the twins and pig hunting for some reason the tune from Deliverance keeps popping into my head (I hope its only the pigs that are squealing...Boy!!) De-ling ding ding ding ding ding!

Yeee Ha - we go a ridin in tat there jeep and chase those liddle piggies till they cant run no more. Then its back to the twins house fo grits an warm goats milk. Ah, this is the life.

(An come on Kay - an early morning romp around the woods with some 6ft4 twins - you would be first in line)

Thanks Kay, I owe you one. I admit I haven't been out on the board for a while. Since moving to Perth I've taken up some of the more extreme sports like cordless bungey jumping, old-time dancing, etc. Here's a recent pic
http://fso4.com/MEMBER_MEDIA/G/Gary%20Taylor/f2c3fb7b-b829-4804-a563-b14abd7f469a.JPG
and another

I'd definitely like to pay a visit, thank you. Maybe later this year, or early next?

I forgot about the skiing in NZ. Mt Hutt, heliskiing, the works! It's a sportsman's paradise, eh! Buster'd love to get out on a toboggan I guess? Do you chop your own wood?

Following the Kiwis will give you more bragging rights than you've been used to back home, but maybe not against the Aussies. ABs got whupped, eh!

The Mighty Bombers handed it out to the Pies by 48 points! They're doing all right. Unfortunately Simon's over in Melbourne so I can't pass on my appreciation of the sport, but from what he was telling me, he'll have no shortage of chums ready to teach him the finer points, such as:
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/large-gallery/0,25410,5033324-5016344-7,00.html
and yes, he takes the grab! He was higher than Joe Cocker, as they say.

North End's campaign starts with a friendly on Wednesday - it's excitement all round! They're only one good season out of the Premiership.

I'm in a rush so need to get back to you in full some other time Garry but just had to comment on your natty choice of orange all in one fleece romper suit for the deer shoot. Combined with the hat its a surprise that you needed a gun at all - surely one look at you in bright Ausie sunlight would have been sufficient to render the deer unable to see (or run away) for at least three days.

Yep - have to chop the wood every day. Started off as a bit of a novelty.... thats worn off!

Is this now the Noticeboard Paul?
Hi Garry, and one and all.
JK, we are with you on this one, we were SO chuffed that a European took the Tour home this year not to mention the win on the Col de Croix de Fer, what a performance. Lucky old us pensioners, at home all day, able to watch the full performance on those 2 days in the Alps. Magnifique!
Why wouldn't anyone work with Cadel on those Stages I wonder!
Kay's offline at present, crook, ....she'll be adding her twopenniesworth in due course.
Can't wait to see y'all , Paul, Garry and Co.XX
